 Ileana has been involved with teaching and studying the art of Bellydance for 10yrs and a Fitness Instructor for 18yrs. She is a previous Tafe Teacher, Head Teacher and Senior Head Teacher in Fashion. She comes from Italian/Romanian background (gypsy) and speaks Italian. She also has unique and well made costumes that will be available to buy.

Suzanne Connors – Newcastle

‘Salsa Sue’ alias Sue Connors has travelled to Cuba to study Salsa, Rudea and the art of Cuban body movement, and was part of the 2005 Australian championship winning Rueda team. She has studied Flamenco in Spain, Belly dancing in Eygpt and attended many dance congresses both here and in New Zealand. Sue has taken out gold, silver and bronze medals in the Trans Tasman Masters Games in Salsa, Latin and Ballroom.

Her workshop will consist of learning the art of Cuban Body Movement, reggation, templeke and some salsa footwork that will build up into a small routine. Her workshop will highlight the fact that as individuals we are all different and move in slightly different ways – and that you won’t need to ‘get it right’ just to have fun. This class will encourage everyone to ‘ give it a go’ and have a ball!

Devi Mamak

Devi is a troupe member and artistic director of the award winning Ghawazi Caravan, based in the Blue Mountains in N.S.W &. is one of Australia's premier  American Tribal Style [ATS] dancers, teachers and choreographers having studied a variety of  Middle Eastern dance styles for over a decade as well as Flamenco, Classical Indian & Ballet.

She has also traveled to San Francisco several times to study with the masters of ATS including FCBD, Gypsy Caravan, Ultra Gypsy & has dedicated herself to ATS since 1999. Devi is the only person in Australia to be
accepted into Carolena Nericcio's intensive Teacher Training Course. Devi has now received her teaching accreditation in the highly regarded FCBD format, with several of Ghawazi Caravan movements being accepted into the FCBD format.
She recently hosted the first Australian Tribal & Trance Festival which was a huge success with participants attending from all over Australia, N.Z & the U.S.A.  Devi and Ghawazi Caravan are highly sought after for workshops and
performances around the country and overseas. Devi has earned a reputation as a patient and thorough teacher. As a performer she is renowned for her strong stage presence, as well as her innovative and colorful choreographies.

Devi holds weekly classes in ATS for all levels and ages in the Blue Mountains & also directs two student troupes, Ghaziya & Ghawazi Girls [for 12 years & under]. She regularly sponsors major proponents of ATS from the
U.S.A. Devi is also a classically trained, conservatorium accredited piano teacher with 24 years teaching experience and is a mother of 2.

Anne Dunston & Sheri Court – Kreish of ‘Eastern Spirit’ Belly Dance will present a fun workshop in which they will teach you one complete choreography!  Anne and Sheri have been teaching belly dance for many years in the Hunter and Newcastle areas. Anne, a Canadian, has been dancing since childhood and comes from a long background of Aerobic Dance, Jazz, Ballet and theatre. An Australian resident for 18yrs she settled in Kearsley and started her ‘Eastern Spirit’ business 8 years ago. Sheri has come from the Taree area trained in several dance schools and now lives and teaches dance in Muswellbrook for “Eastern Spirit’. Now together, they bring many different styles, choreographed routines, props and ‘easy to learn’ little numbers to class s using humor, attitude and a relaxed style of movement.

In their workshop, they will teach you sexy, belly dance moves and Latin steps to create a “Las Vegas’ feel to this funky piece of Egyptian music.

 Full notes and a CD of the music and voice/over included in this workshop. Bring a veil or a full skirt and a bottle of water!!! Suitable for all levels of dancers. (*Yes, this choreographed routine may later be used for performance by yourself or your group.)

Colleen Potts

Colleen is a retired Head Teacher Science currently working as Performance Consultant / Production Manager for the Hunter School of  Performing Arts.  She has more than 40 years experience in Performance, Production Management and Stage Management.

Colleen holds a Bach.of Science Degree, an Advanced Diploma in Entertainment Industry Training, an Advanced Diploma in Production Management and an Advanced Diploma in Stage Management having worked for 12 years in our Civic Theatre.  She is currently Production Manager for a season of “CATS” later this year.

Colleen has been Belly dancing for 12 years. She teaches Tap dancing for EastLakes and Belly dancing for EastLakes,LakeMacquarie and HunterUniversity of the Third Age. Her U3A ladies are all over 50 and dance for exercise, fun and fitness.  They are in great demand for entertainment  in the Nursing Homes and RetirementVillages around the Hunter.

Colleen has designed elegant costumes for the mature figure. Her Workshop will provide patterns and show how to make Harem Pants, a Circle and a Half Skirt, a Hankerchief Over Skirt, Beaded Bras and Belt, Vest with long split sleeves. Hat with a veil, and Chiffon Wings.

 Peita Breese, also known as Lash L'Amour, founder of the SPaNK Alternative Art  Space in Mayfield, has been a major building block in  establishing the burlesque scene in Newcastle.
A natural dance enthusiast and self taught cabaret and burlesque choreographer, teacher, performer and event organiser.  Her style influenced by a background in ballet, gymnastics, drama, speech, modelling and deportment; more recently, much influence is derived from classic and modern burlesque artists, movies, and musicals, along with choreographers such as Bob Fosse (responsible for the masterpiece 'Cabaret' among others).
Peita has showcased her choreographed performances at the Beautiful  Women Expo at the Wests Leagues Club, the SPaNK Fetish Ball at Club G, as well as the Burlesque Ball, OK Danger, and The Liberation Of Lady Luck at the SPaNK  aLT aRT SPaCE.

Jean - Luc Stora

Brazilian Samba Workshop

Jean-Luc Stora (aka. SambaFrog) began studying Brazilian Dance, Capoeira and Percussion back in 1990 with the Samba schools of San Francisco. Inspired by the intoxicating rhythms ofBrazil and the thriving Latin and Caribbean arts community in San Francisco, he began dancing and drumming professionally with various local companies and bands, and in 1995 was chosen as San Francisco's King of Carnaval. Pursuing his interest in Latin American music, dance and culture, Jean-Luc travelled extensively in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico. He speaks Spanish and Portuguese along with English and his native tongue, French.

Jean-Luc began performing and teaching Samba in Australia in 1996 before returning to San Francisco for several years where he enjoyed teaching packed classes at the Dance Mission studio. In 2001 he taught Brazilian percussion and dance in France, performed at music festivals throughout the country with "Les Diables Bleus" and directed the Brazilian dance company, Cuisse de Samba. Now once again based in Sydney, Jean-Luc has established Dance Central with the vision of bringing together various dance styles in one location.

Brazilian Samba - Workshop description
This workshop is open to all levels. The emphasis is on having a fun physical workout as you take on mesmerising and seductive dance moves from the streets of Brazil. Invoking the energy, excitement and passion of the BrazilianSambaSchools and blocos. Afro-Brazilian, Samba Reggae, Bahian and Rio style moves are covered. This workshop is great for your Samba and for your fitness!

 

What to wear & what to bring
The ideal is to wear stretchy dance gear or comfortable exercise wear. Basically you need something that won't limit your range of motion. It's best to wear sneakers or dance shoes without heels. You can also dance barefoot although you will lack a bit of support. Bring extra clothes for after the class and some water because you will sweat.

 In her workshop, learn to name and recognise EGYPTIAN DRUM RHYTHMS, and dance to them. To know and have a basic understanding of rhythms and variations makes both choreography and improvisation so much easier.

Bring zills so we can explore the relation ship between zills and drum. Don't worry if you don't have them, its not compulsory. Suitable for those with 6 months or more experience.
